Furthermore, we have some very handy friends who spent countless weekends at the lake helping us get it ready. The house we decided on needed so much work (which was a bit intimidating), but we were willing to put in some sweat equity to make this work. Many homes with deep water have steep lots at SML. It's a rare find to have a house with a pancake flat lot, but that has deep water. And the sole factor that swayed our decision (because we looked at several phenomenal houses) to purchase this home - was the lot. We toured a total of 32 homes before deciding on this one.

We had vacationed at SML two years prior and fell in love with how clean the water was, but yet it was still surrounded by such breathtaking scenery. My husband has always wanted to live on the lake, so when we sold the farm at the end of 2016, we began the search for a lake house at Smith Mountain Lake (SML). When he passed away in 2003, we kept the home and used it frequently to share with friends and family. He loved to hunt, so for retirement, he purchased a 100+ acre slice of heaven where he could enjoy the land at his leisure. At that time, he had been retired and had owned a small farm in Augusta County. This property comes with a story and we have it because of my late father-in-law. Why Holley and Steve Scheffel chose Huddleston Her name aptly describes her personality. We also have a chocolate lab named Sweet Mia. She is a handful, but we forgive her because she's so stinking cute. We also have two very energetic water pups! We have a beautiful and loving yellow lab named Dixie. We have one son, Trevor, who recently graduated from Liberty University. We are full-time residents of Huddleston and live at a local marina while our house is occupied in the summers.

He went to Annandale High School in Fairfax County and I went to Gar-Field in neighboring Prince William County. Steve and I both grew up in Northern Virginia just a short distance from Washington, DC.
